In the community: Domestic violence a pandemic within the pandemic

Domestic violence has been front page news this year, and it’s particularly relevant to landlords thanks to new NSW legislation that came in prior to COVID-19. The Residential Tenancies Amendment (Circumstances of Domestic Violence) Regulation 2018 (NSW) protects victims of domestic violence living in a rental property, allowing them to break a residential lease without penalty or fear of future discrimination.

Sadly, domestic violence increased globally during 2020, to the extent that it’s become known as “the pandemic within the pandemic”.

One woman in our community trying to empower others in the fight against domestic violence is Mel Thomas, who runs the KYUP Project. Trained in martial arts, she’s an inspirational speaker who runs workshops to help empower Australians to champion their safety and wellbeing. The Agency believes in KYUP’s goal to end the cycle of violence at a grassroots level, and wants to spread the word about the positive work they are doing in our community.
