Searching for pet friendly homes

Do you believe that pets are more like members of the family rather than just furry companions?

Increasingly, millennial home buyers are factoring in their pets for the big move. With the difficulty that comes with catering to pets in rentals, it only makes sense to take the next step of homeownership. After all, a home with plenty of space for your dog to run around sounds like a dream come true!

So what should you look for when buying a pet friendly home?

·         Size and Space

Depending on your pet, you may need a big yard to run around with adequate fencing. But if they prefer being inside, an open plan space with hallways may be more practical.

·         Pet Friendly floors

Think about flooring if you have inside pets. Carpet may not be the best for those pets with muddy paws, or hardwood flooring can get scratched up with long claws. Our suggestion? Look for pet-proof flooring like bamboo, stone or ceramic tiles.

·         Great outdoors

How close is the property to your local dog parks? Are there café’s nearby that are pet-friendly? There is nothing more annoying than having to go for a drive to find a nice place to walk your furry friend.

·         Check the bylaws

If you’re buying a strata property like a unit, townhouse or apartment, make sure you check that pets are permitted under the bylaws. Sometimes they can be quite specific as to what kind or size of pets are allowed!
