Where: 9News
When: Sunday 27 November during 9News at 6pm, and every 4th Sunday after that
Duchenne Australia
The Agency’s Adam Naumovski is proud to nominate Duchenne Australia for this month’s Best of the West!
Duchenne is a severe form of muscular dystrophy that primarily affects boys, due to a genetic mutation of the X chromosome. It’s estimated that 1,000 Australians currently live with Duchenne and the related Becker muscular dystrophy.
Having the disease means the muscles have no ability to protect or repair themselves, causing the muscles to go into chronic inflammation and turning the muscles into scar tissue. Due to its severe nature, many Duchenne sufferers won’t live past the age of 26, usually succumbing to heart or respiratory failure.
Duchenne Australia has three major goals: to offer sufferers the best evidence-based care for the best quality of life, to fund clinical trials and research, and to lobby the federal government to cut the red tape around these clinical trials.
Winning the $5,000 Best of the West prize will help them fund a mental health service for affected families, fund clinical trials, pay for nurses and continue their advocacy efforts.
If you'd like to help Duchenne Australia win this award, you can nominate them too! Just follow this link to nominate them or someone else you think deserves it.
Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
The Agency’s Heather O’Neil is proud to nominate the Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre for November’s Best of the West!
Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (KWRH) is a not-for-profit organisation that cares for sick, injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife; breeds threatened species; conducts training and research; and educates schools and the community.
Nestled in a beautiful national park surrounded by the Jarrah forest in Perth Hills, KWRH offers guided tours and special school programs. They also travel around the community, running programs at festivals, markets, schools and aged care homes.
KWRH admits more than 3,200 animals a year, a number that is growing at a rate of at least 100 per year at a minimum. If they were to win Best of the West, the $5,000 award would go toward vet bills, food and equipment to help them keep up with the ever-increasing number of animals entering their sanctuary.
You can help Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre by throwing another nomination their way. Just follow this link to nominate them or someone else you think is deserving.
