Interview with The Agency Managing Director Stuart Cox
The Agency has a unique, highly scalable business model, and is the fastest-growing real estate services company in Australia. But at its core, what The Agency is really about is its people. It's built on the fundamental idea of a people-first culture. To find out more about their industry-leading business model, host Jon Williams spoke with The Agency General Manager, Stuart Cox.
Jon Williams: Why do you think The Agency has enjoyed such impressive growth?
Stuart Cox: So it's been five years of exceptional growth. We started as an industry disrupter, and we've just been awarded top offers for the third year running. The benefit of the group is that we're not a franchise, which means we're not bound by those restrictions of ownership or by multiple layers of management that sometimes get in the way. We're actually a direct-engagement business with our agents. This makes us nimble and flexible. We're very progressive with things but we're powerful enough to actually make decisions quickly. Most importantly, to us as a business, agents are our clients. That's actually unique in the industry and there are very few of our competitors who actually do this.
Jon Williams: What does the future look like for The Agency in WA?
Stuart Cox: The future for us looks really clear. The industry in general has been running the same way for 30+ years. Other industries have taken advantage of technology, changes in facilities and the ability to work mobile. But the real estate industry has been stuck in the past. So our aim now is to create a really flexible model. The car industry is a really good analogy. You've got different brands like Toyota, BMW, etc. They've issued different models, they don't just give you one car. Our industry now is stuck with the one-car analogy, and we want to improve that model. Whether it's more technology, less technology, more support, less support, or just the freedom to work on their own, our aim is to give agents more choice.
